Picnic or pub lunch. In the afternoon we will go to the early medieval lann site of Lanherne and explore the medieval church within its raised oval churchyard and several fine medieval granite crosses including the most elaborate lantern headed cross in Cornwall. We also hope to be able to see the early medieval inscribed stone, made unusually of Pentewan stone, in the grounds of the adjacent convent. The four sides of the shaft are decorated with relief carved interlace work and an interlacing serpent. The inscription on the front is unclear, but it may be the name of the sculptor, for a similar name appears on a similar cross at Sancreed.
