Walks
CAS Field Walks 2010
Sunday 13th June Kennal Vale, Ponsanooth
with Dr Linnea Glynne-Rule. (SW )
Please meet at the entranceat 11:00. Kennall Vale is an
extremely attractive 8 hectare site wihtin the valley at Kennall,
Ponsanooth. You turn at the village shop and the road takes
you up to the entrance. There is limited parking and you are
advised to park in Cot Wood.
English Heritage describes the site as :
‘one of the few surviving examples of a large 19th century
gunpowder manufacturing complex to retain its overall
integrity of layout with an unusually complex range of
reasonably well preserved features.’
I would expect the formal visit to end no later than 1.00 pm.
There are NO facilties on the site. However, if it is fine, it is a
wonderful place for a picnic, or there is the Fox and Hounds at
Comfort on the way to Lanner.
The incorporating mills are dramatic and well worth seeing, but require visitors to be reasonably fit and careful. Please wear boots,
wellingtons or sensible shoes. There is still much to enjoy of the site, if you prefer not to clamber up to the incorporating mills.
Historic Environmental Service was involved in some work at Kennall Vale recently. It was organised through a project that has been
running, called: "Conserving Cornwall's Past". Funded by the Hertiage Lottery Fund, HES has helped the Cornwall Wildlife Trust who own
the site by carrying out small scale repair work; producing an interpretation board and leaflet. A photo survey was also executed (with the
help from volunteers) - to monitor the condition of the ruined buildings.
Linnea Glynne-Rule who is leading the walk was very involved in the photo survey and also contributed toward the board.
